Dough
Prepare as directed in Donut and Cinnamon roll recipe.
Once rolled out, cut into rectangles about 4 cm by 8-10 cm. Cut two slits along the length of the rectangles about 80 percent of the length. Use the three strips to braid together, pinching ends together when done.
Allow to rise, well separated, for about an hour.
Gently place in hot oil to fry.
Drain and cool slightly after removing from the oil.
Plunge into cold syrup and keep there as long as possible.
Syrup (Make 24 hours ahead of time!)
Make sure there is plenty of syrup! I use two times this recipe for 5 cup dough recipe. The secret to good koeksisters is the ice cold syrup, and plenty of it.
Boil together ingredients, and place in fridge overnight.
Cook as directed above.
Drain koeksisters and allow excess syrup to drip into trays. Cool and reuse syrup.
