Koeksisters

Ingredients

  • 4 c sugar
  • 1 ½ c water
  • ½ t ginger
  • 2 sticks cinnamon

Instructions

Make sure there is plenty of syrup! (Used three times this recipe for 7 ½ cup donut recipe!) Boil together ingredients, and place in fridge overnight. Roll out dough and cut into rectangles about 4 cm by 8 - 10 cm. Cut two slits about 80% of the way up the length of the rectangle. Plait the three strands and press together well. Allow to rise an hour. Fry in oil, drain for a few minutes, then plunge into the cold syrup. Keep in syrup as long as possible. Drain koeksisters and reuse syrup. The secret to good koeksisters is the ice cold syrup, and plenty of it.
