Hot Cross Buns

Easter isn't Easter with these favorites!

Ingredients

Dough:

  • 1 t salt
  • 1/3 c butter
  • 4 t yeast
  • ¼ c brown sugar
  • 2 t mixed spice
  • ½ c currants
  • 1 egg
  • 1 c warm milk
  • 1 egg for painting rolls before baking

Crosses:

  • 5/6 c flour
  • <1/4 c oil
  • 2ml salt
  • ½ c milk

Glaze:

  • 50 ml milk
  • 50 ml water
  • 50 ml sugar

Instructions

Mix dry ingredients then rub in butter.

Prepare yeast with milk and sugar.

Add to dry ingredients. Add egg and knead. Leave to rise for an hour.

Punch down and divide into rolls.

Paint rolls with beaten egg, and then pipe crosses over the top.

Allow to rise 15 minutes or more.

Bake at 350° F for 15 - 20 minutes.

Crosses:

Mix well together and pipe over rolls

Glaze:

Boil ingredient together and brush over rolls after taking from the oven.

Note:

I sometimes use my Donut & Cinnamon roll dough and add spices and raisins to it.
