Cook finer slivers in a pot with water for 30-40 minutes. Do not burn!
Drain and cool.
Return to pot with 1 1/2 c sugar and 3 T water.
Boil until transparent and water nearly boiled away, about 20 minutes.
Drain while hot, transfer to a bowl and toss int he remaining sugar.
Place on wax paper to cool and dry. Work to separate pieces while cooling.
